THE WINDSURF GAMBIT

Seventy-two hours in July 2025: OpenAI’s exclusivity clock ran out, Google wired $2.4 billion for the founders, the company was declared dead on arrival — and Cognition bought what was left before Monday’s all-hands. It may be the fastest consequential M&A in AI history.

THE SETUP

Windsurf — originally founded as Codeium — had rebuilt itself in late 2024 as the first genuinely ‘agentic’ IDE: the Cascade agent, the Tab prediction engine, inline awareness of whatever the developer was doing. By mid-2025 it had $82M ARR, 350+ enterprise customers, and hundreds of thousands of daily active users. OpenAI spent spring 2025 circling a ~$3B acquisition.

The part that belongs in a museum case: Cognition did not get a husk. It got the product, the trademark, the IP, the enterprise book, and the whole team — roughly 250 people who had just watched their CEO leave on a Friday and needed a reason to believe by Monday. Jeff Wang — who had been running the company for three days as interim CEO — came with the deal.

WHAT COGNITION ACTUALLY BOUGHT

The IDE — the last missing surface. Devin did asynchronous delegation; Windsurf did synchronous acceleration. Agents for the backlog, an editor for the work you keep.
Cascade — the in-editor agent that SWE models were trained against.
Tab — passive prediction tuned for latency; its engine became the SWE-1-mini tier.
The GTM machine — enterprise ARR that was doubling quarter-over-quarter, with under 5% customer overlap with Devin’s book.
Full Claude access restored — Google’s deal had complicated it; the acquisition notes explicitly restored it.

THE EPILOGUE: DEVIN DESKTOP

In June 2026, Cognition did the final move: renamed Windsurf to Devin Desktop. One brand, one agent, two tempos — the IDE for the work you drive, the cloud agents for the work you delegate. The IDE Cognition rescued in a weekend became the front half of the Devin product line.

The model thread woven through this story — Windsurf had already shipped its own SWE-1 family a month before the acquisition — continues in the SWE-1 exhibit.
