DEVIN

Devin is the product that made ‘AI software engineer’ a phrase people argue about at dinner. Unveiled March 12, 2024 as a demo that could pass engineering interviews and bill real Upwork clients, it spent the following two years metastasizing from a chat window into a full autonomous engineering department.

THE DEMO THAT ATE MARCH

The launch claim, March 2024: Devin resolved 13.86% of SWE-bench issues end-to-end, against a previous unassisted best under 2%. The accompanying footage showed the agent with its own shell, its own editor, its own browser — planning, executing, debugging, and shipping inside a sandboxed machine of its own. It reportedly cleared practical engineering interviews at AI companies and completed paid work on Upwork.

The internet did what it does: half declared the profession over, half declared it fake, and Cognition quietly ran an early-access program for the rest of the year.

GENERAL AVAILABILITY

On December 10, 2024, Devin went generally available at $500/month per team — deliberately flat: no seat limits, a Slack integration, a VS Code extension, and an API, with onboarding from Cognition’s own engineers. The launch receipts named Nubank, Ramp, and Vesta, and to prove the point Cognition had Devin file real contributions into open-source repos including Anthropic’s MCP, LlamaIndex, and Zod. Some teams reported project timelines accelerating as much as 16x on delegateable work.

THE PRICE COLLAPSE

In spring 2025 Cognition did the un-enterprise thing and dropped the floor out: a Core plan starting at $20, billing in ACU — Agent Compute Units — metered per unit of work rather than per seat. The message embedded in the pricing model is the whole thesis: you do not license Devin like software, you staff Devin like labor and pay for the hours it works.

THE SURFACE AREA, CA. 2026

surface what it is
Devin Web the original command center — assign tickets, watch sessions, review PRs
Devin Desktop the Windsurf IDE reborn (June 2026) — the agentic editor for synchronous work
Devin CLI Devin in the terminal — pipe tickets in, get branches out
Devin API other software hiring Devin — sessions, tasks, and results over the wire
Fusion the integrated surface SWE-2 rolls out across — agents, IDE and fleet in one pane
Slack / Linear / Jira the front doors — tag @Devin on a ticket, receive a pull request

THE SUPPORTING MACHINERY

Devin could knock some tasks out of the park, but for the most part it was still a very junior engineer. — Cognition, one year after launch, on the 2024 model. The annals record the junior getting promoted.

The engine underneath this product stopped being a leased frontier model and started being a home-grown one — that story is the entire SWE wing of this archive.
